More street art in Finsbury Park

I took this on the day it went up and before it was protected by a sheet of perspex (street art in frames - what's that about?), but I haven't made any posts for some time so it's not exactly fresh, though it's still there on the corner. PEN 1 is rumoured to be the latest rival to Banksy, but this misses on the satire and political comment and graphic simplicity - a different genre altogether that takes celebrity as a focus. It's big (12' by 8') and technically proficient. It's the 'Rap Pact' - rappers Diddy, Suge, Biggy and Tupac playing pool. Another recent work sited in Shoreditch is of Kate Moss:

Our monarch in a bullet-ridden smart car has been repaced by this Dan Innes stencil that I just don't get, called "Where to darlin'?". Is it a stencilled equivalent of the rocket launch cliché in films?

Up the garden paths

A newly restored tiled front path just up the road inspired this collection of images documenting a variety of refurbished neighbouring paths where the original tiles have been replaced, as well as some of the few surviving Victorian patterns. Ours is original and one of the prettiest, I think. A similar design featured in the Boyle Family's Broken Path series, which I saw at the Hayward Gallery in 1986 soon after I started studying at St Martin's. We had already lived in this house for some years and I was thrilled to find our front path on the gallery wall - the first path is ours. It inspired a series of plastercast works, one of my only attempts at 3D or relief. Theirs are in fibreglass and very large scale:

From urban art to aspirational topiary

A couple of stencil graffiti have appeared at the bottom of our street by a Banksy tribute artist called T Wat. Her Majesty driving a bullet-ridden smart car has quickly been followed by a tiny white mouse and a throned policeman. I paused with my shopping and dry cleaning yesterday to take some snaps before Hackney's cleaning squad set to work and got into conversation with a young German who showed me pictures on his mobile of T Wat creating a large scale stencil featuring one of Banksy's infamous rats being led off in handcuffs by armed pest control soldiers:

In typical Finsbury Park style, the stencils are sited just yards from our local aspirational topiary hedges.

The second-hand shop on the corner of the street, where for decades Mr Phillips, multiple brothel keeper, slum landlord, rumoured millionaire, piled high the unsavoury junk that furnished his properties has been transformed into a small gallery guarded by two snarling Dobermans that are rather less fearsome than their real life predecessors.
